A. Rulemaking/Enforcement Agencies and Committees
1. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the State of Indiana
Indiana University - Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) and associated facilities (henceforth called the University) has been issued a specific broad scope license by the NRC to use radioactive (byproduct) material. The NRC periodically performs inspections to ensure the safe handling of radioactive material as well as compliance with all license conditions and federal regulations.
Naturally-occurring and accelerator-produced radionuclides are not regulated by the NRC. These radioactive materials are subject to the regulations established and enforced by the Indiana State Department of Health.
Standards set forth in this manual are based on the U.S. NRC's Code of Federal Regulations Title 10, Indiana Rule for Radiation Control (Document 410IAC5), and the University's byproduct material license. These documents, along with other radiation safety information, are available at the RSO for review and/or reproduction. All persons who receive, possess, use, or transfer radioactive materials within the University must follow procedures and regulations set forth in this manual unless otherwise noted.
