The RSO is the authorized representative of the RSC and radiation safety committees regarding radiation safety matters within the University. The RSO's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• educate users in the safe handling of radioactive material or radiation-producing devices
• reviewing all protocols and/or amendments to existing protocols involving the use of radioactive material or radiation-producing devices
• ordering, receiving, processing, storing, and dispensing all radioactive material and maintaining pertinent records
• providing personnel monitoring and maintaining personnel radiation exposure records including bioassays
• performing and maintaining records of periodic radiation surveys of all facilities in which radioactive material or radiation-producing devices are used or stored
• supervising and maintaining records for the disposal of radioactive wastes
• suspending any operation involving an unacceptable radiation hazard
• reviewing the construction or remodeling of facilities in which radioactive material or radiation producing devices are to be used
• providing consultation services on all aspects of radiation protection
• maintaining all NRC byproduct material and state licenses
• acting as the administrator of the radiation safety program and carrying out the actions of the RSC and radiation safety committees
