C. Laboratory Authorization

3. Decommissioning of Authorized Radionuclide Laboratories

Any authorized radionuclide laboratory which is no longer used for radionuclide work or storage must be decommissioned by the RSO. Decommissioning should be requested by the PH through written memorandum to the RSO. Before this request is made, all unused radioactive material, radioactive waste, empty waste containers, etc., should be transferred to the RSO, another approved PH, or another approved laboratory. Following the request for decommissioning, the RSO will perform a contamination (wipe) survey and direct radiation survey. Any required decontamination is the responsibility of the PH. When a laboratory has been shown to be free of contamination, the RSO will deface or remove all radiation signs and labels.

In the situation where a laboratory is used by more than one PH, decommissioning is not necessary as long as one PH continues work in the laboratory; however, a written memorandum from the PH must be submitted stating the desire to remove the laboratory from his/her permit. Any authorized radionuclide laboratory which is not decommissioned is subject to all applicable radiation safety rules and regulations regardless of the presence or absence of radioactive material in that lab.
