Each person using radioactive material must do all of the following:
Read, understand, and follow all the rules and regulations contained in this manual as well as any special conditions specified on the appropriate permit. Individuals must also read any information distributed by the RSO (e.g., refresher training handouts,the Radiation Safety Newsletter, etc.).
Keep radiation exposure As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).
Wear the appropriate personnel radiation monitoring device issued. Each user is responsible for having appropriate bioassay procedures performed as stipulated by the RSO.
Ensure that all radioactive material is secured from unauthorized use/removal (e.g., by locking unoccupied laboratories).
Notify the RSO of pregnancy (if the employee wishes to do so) by submitting an A-7, Notice of Pregnancy, form.
Maintain good housekeeping practices in the laboratory.
Comply with restrictions regarding eating, drinking, smoking, storing consumable items, or applying cosmetics in laboratories.
Label all containers of radioactive material, contaminated items, and radioactive waste.
Survey oneself and work area for contamination and, if necessary, decontaminate before leaving the laboratory.
Report spills and/or accidents involving radioactive material immediately to the RSO and the PH.
Become familiar with the procedures for maintaining inventory records and laboratory surveys and the location of the Radionuclide Inventory and Survey Book and this manual.
Submit new paperwork when working under a new permit. In addition, an A-13, Employee Status Change, form should be submitted to remove an authorized user from a permit.
Comply with any requirements established by the RSO in conjunction with RRSC recommendations and NRC regulations.
