J. Posting and Labeling

1.Posting requirements

In general, all radiation signs must include the radiation propeller symbol and be printed on a yellow background with purple, magenta, or black wording. These signs are available from the RSO. The following specific requirements are given for posting areas where radioactive material is used or stored:

  1. All areas where radioactive material is used or stored must be posted with a sign or placard bearing the radiation propeller symbol and the words "Caution - Radioactive Materials." This posting must appear on the door to the lab but may also be placed in the actual use area (e.g., above a lab bench or on a fume hood). This also includes any designated radioactive material storage area (e.g., refrigerator, cabinet, etc.).
  2. A form entitled Notice to Employees (NRC Form 3) must be posted in at least one authorized radionuclide laboratory listed on a given PH's permit. If a PH has authorized radionuclide laboratories on more than one floor of a building or in more than one building, a NRC Form 3 must be posted in each of those general areas.
  3. If conditions exist within a laboratory such that the major portion of an individual's body could receive greater than 5 mrem in any 1 hour at 30 centimeters from a radiation source, a sign bearing the radiation propeller symbol and the words "Caution (or Danger) - Radiation Area" must be posted. Any such posting will be carried out by the RSO.
  4. If conditions exist within a laboratory such that the major portion of an individual's body could receive greater than 100 mrem in any 1 hour at 30 centimeters from a radiation source, a sign bearing the radiation propeller symbol and the words "Caution (or Danger) - High Radiation Area" must be posted. Any such posting will be carried out by the RSO.
  5. If conditions exist within a laboratory such that an individual would be exposed to airborne radioactivity in excess of the amounts specified in the NRC regulations, a sign bearing the radiation propeller symbol and the words "Caution (or Danger) - Airborne Radioactivity Area" must be posted. Any such posting will be carried out by the RSO.
  6. Any equipment which emits machine-produced radiation (e.g., x-ray diffraction units) must be posted with a sign bearing the radiation propeller symbol and the words "Caution (or Danger) - X-rays, This Equipment Produces X-rays When Energized"
