L. Decontamination and Shielding Requirements

4. Decontamination of Wounds

  1. All contaminated wounds must be reported to the RSO immediately. Any necessary first aid should be provided before consideration of a contamination problem.
  2. Wounds should be immediately flushed with large volumes of water. The edges of the wound should be spread during this flushing process. This should be conducted over a sink or some type of open container to prevent widespread contamination.
  3. A survey should be performed to ascertain the level of contamination in and around the wound. Use of a portable survey instrument (e.g., GM meter) is recommended if it will detect the type of radiation being emitted. The wound may be blotted with sterile gauze and counted with the appropriate instrumentation to determine levels of contamination in and around the wound.
