M. Radwaste Disposal

1. Radwaste Pick-up Schedule

A monthly calendar is provided to all affected Permit Holders indicating, by building code, the scheduled pick-up days. The RSO will only be at each building on the date(s) provided, so all lab personnel should plan accordingly. In order for the RSO to pick up a lab's waste on a certain date, a request for pick-up must be made no later than 12:00 p.m. (noon) on the day prior to the pick-up date (see Requesting Pick-up).

EXAMPLE

The scheduled pick-up date is March 20th.

The RSO must be notified by noon on March 19th.

Pick-ups should be scheduled as early as possible, since there will be a limited number each day; however, all waste must be completely ready for pick-up prior to notifying the RSO (see Waste Preparation). Additional waste containers should be kept on hand to use after a pick-up request has been made. If the RSO determines that the maximum number of pick-ups have already been scheduled on the requested date, the lab personnel will be notified as soon as possible. At that time, a specific option for disposing of the waste will be selected at the discretion of the RSO.

These options may include:

  1. Waiting for the next pick-up date, if reasonable (e.g., for buildings on a weekly schedule). Additional waste containers may be obtained from the RSO and a temporary increase in possession limit may be implemented, if warranted.
  2. Allowing lab personnel to deliver the waste to the RSO. This option may be allowed for buildings with less frequent pick-up schedules (e.g., every 2 weeks/monthly).
  3. Rescheduling a pick-up date for the building. This option may be used if multiple labs in a particular building require a pick-up.
