In the event of a fire or a major emergency, the following actions must be taken:
Immediately notify all persons in the area.
Pull the fire alarm and notify the campus operator from a safe location.
Inform the campus operator that there is an emergency involving radioactive material and instruct him/her to notify the fire department and the RSO.
Attempt to put out minor fires if the radiation hazard is not immediately present.
Calmly inform emergency personnel of the presence and location of radioactive material. Remember - in most cases, the fire or major emergency is the primary hazard. Emergency personnel should not delay medical treatment of injured persons or other emergency response procedures (e.g., fire fighting) due to the presence of radioactive material.
Request that potentially contaminated personnel remain in the immediate vicinity until a member of the RSO arrives.
Prepare and submit, within 14 days, a written report about the accident, actions taken, and what measures will be taken to prevent a recurrence.
Any decontamination would generally be performed under the supervision of the RSO.
Allow no persons to resume work without approval of the RSO.
